Historical context War and Peace is known for its realism, something Tolstoy achieved through intensive research. At the Rostov home, everyone likes Dolokhov except Natasha, who sees him as a bad man. Their retreat is the"fruit" of"unconscious activity" rather than the will of Napoleon. Book IX The life-and-death struggle against France begins, with Napoleon depicted as a glory-seeking fool. In the war for business supremacy, Schwartz shows we must throw out the old management models and stereotypes that pit suits against nerds. He does not recognize a cannonball when it splashes in the water.

Almost no one, however, anticipated what would prove to be one of the more lasting consequences of the leak: surprised admiration for American diplomats. Natasha is attracted to Anatole Kuragin, who confesses his love. He lives in New York City. Pierre witnesses the execution of several of his prison mates, and bonds with a wise peasant named Platon Karataev. Anna, calling Napoleon the Antichrist, declares that Russia alone must save Europe.

We are introduced to the Rostovs, a noble Moscow family, including the lively daughter Natasha, the quiet cousin Sonya, and the impetuous son Nicholas, who has just joined the army led by the old General Kutuzov. Yet he also inspired total devotion in a staff of acolytes, making them equally relentless in pursuit of their goals. Book XI Tolstoy discusses mass activity as a combination of"infinitesimal units of activity" and provides a short summary of past and future events. Distressed by this news, Pierre becomes deranged and flees his companions, wandering alone through Moscow. The battle is described as a death duel, with the Russians winning morally, if not physically. The thirteen-year-old Rostov daughter, Natasha, appears, carrying her doll.

Almost no one, however, anticipated what would prove to be one of the more lasting consequences of the leak: surprised admiration for American diplomats. The two men encounter many wounded soldiers at a site where a Russian detachment has been overwhelmed.

He shares the view of other Holbrooke advisers that their key diplomatic aim — peace talks with the Taliban — got short shrift in overall strategy as a result.
